Fifa 11 to claim Christmas number one?

Bookmaker William Hill reckons EA's footie regular will snatch the top spot on the Christmas sales chart. And industry news site Gamesindustry.biz predicts a potential top five...Last Christmas, Modern Warfare 2 dominated the video game sales charts, making a tidy $1bn in revenue for Activision, and eclipsing every blockbusting movie Hollywood could chuck at us. This year, things look much more open. Sure, there's a new Call of Duty title on the horizon, but we'll also be enjoying Fifa 11, PES 2011, Medal of Honor, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and a whole host of family-friendly Wii titles. Bookmaker William Hill has made Fifa the odds-on favourite to claim the Christmas crown, while Gamesindustry.biz has produced its own Top Five prediction for us to mull over. And it looks like this...1. Fifa 11 (Electronic Arts) William Hill Christmas number one odds: Even2. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision Blizzard) William Hill Christmas number one odds: 5-23. Wii Party (Nintendo) William Hill Christmas number one odds: 5-14. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (Ubisoft) William Hill Christmas number one odds: 6-15. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft) William Hill Christmas number one odds: 8-1If I were a betting man (and the last time I was in the bookies it was to put a tenner on Kevin Keegan's horse Funfare Wane while he was still manager of City. It won...) I'd go for Call of Duty: Black Ops. Activision is spending millions on marketing, and there's been masses of interest in the series since that whole Infinity Ward "incident". Chrome Web Store preview adds Google Checkout payments, recommendations

Google will be throwing open the doors to the Chrome Web Store some time in the coming months, and they're currently preparing for a whirlwind global tour to sing the praises of HTML5 and Chrome. On the tour, the Web Store will be a frequent topic of discussion and they've recently announced a couple important additions to the Store's developer preview.

Google Checkout payments are now supported, and developers can sign up for a merchant account on their dashboard page. Page previews have now been added -- so you can see how your app will look in the Store prior to publishing. Pages can be customized with header images and Google is also allowing devs to upload their own promotional banners (they'll be displayed when your app is feature in the store).

One downside for developers hoping to sell their apps in the Web Store is that Google Checkout might be the only payment option. Checkout still isn't available in that many countries, so international devs looking to deliver localized Web apps will have to wait for Google to make good on their expansion promises.

ed note: it's become an expected part of app stores, but as you can see in the screenshot the Chrome Web Store will offer recommendations based on what other users install.Chrome Web Store preview adds Google Checkout payments, recommendations originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:00:00 EST. Jersey Shore Star May Face Situation Over App

While Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino’s iPhone app has been making the news this week due to its appearance in Apple’s top 10-grossing application list, the Jersey Shore star may soon be facing a lawsuit over a game included in the app.The app features a game called “Grenade Dodger,” in which users attempt to dodge unattractive women, or “grenades” in Jersey Shore-speak. The problem, according to Radar Online, is that photographers were dispatched by the game’s developer to clubs in order to snatch pictures of women in the “3 or 4” category for inclusion in the Situation’s application. One of the girls featured in “Grenade Dodger” is reportedly horrified over her insertion in the game and is considering taking legal action. Read Moreread more

WarLight is an addictive turn-based, Risk-style Time-Waster

I don't remember when I last posted a turn-based Time-Waster, but WarLight was so nice, I simply couldn't skip it. It's basically Risk; you get a world map, and you start off with a certain percentage in your color. With every turn, you get a few more "armies" (depending on how much space you've conquered), and you try to take over more of the map by attacking certain territories.
Each turn is made up of three stages. First, you deploy all of the new armies that you received (each country may have more than one army stationed in it). Then, you attack or transfer into new territories.
You can see how many armies are currently stationed in every new territory; if a territory has 10 armies, attacking it with a single army would do you little good.
Of course, while all of this is going on, your rival is also attacking and conquering their own section of the world and rapidly approaching your territories. Suddenly, you need to start fortifying your territories, finding ways to conquer your rival's territories, and figuring out what they're going to do next.
The game is very versatile, and it offers a ton of options. You can even graph your progress through the game in order to see how many armies each of you had on the board at every turn, or how many territories each of you controlled, etc.
You can play against the computer (especially useful for learning the game - there's a tutorial to start you off), but the real fun begins when you play against another person. This is one of those games that can be open in a background window all day long. It's very addictive indeed.WarLight is an addictive turn-based, Risk-style Time-Waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. Real Football 2011: the mobile competitor to Fifa returns ? and brings David Villa

Gameloft's respected million-selling footie sim is returning this autumn, endorsed by the Spain and Barcelona wonder striker, David Villa...For the last decade the world of football simulation has been defined by one battle: Fifa vs PES. These two console titans have battled it out over successive hardware generations, the balance of power shifting one way then the other. But this struggle is not the only show in town. EA's Fifa is also warring on another front, against a veteran mobile series, Real Football.Somehow French publisher Gameloft has been making these games for six years. That might not seem like a long time, but when the first Real Football title arrived in 2004, there was no such thing as the iPhone, or the Android, and the smartphone market was still the preserve of businessmen and uber geeks. This was the era of Java handsets, with tiny screens, limited colours, and weedy processors that asthmatically huffed and puffed their way through even the most modest gaming applications. In those days, phones often wouldn't allow multiple simultaneous button presses - so, for football sims, you could forget about building your shot power while running. But despite all this Real Football somehow conspired to be playable. It has also been hugely successful, despite the arrival of EA's all-conquering Fifa franchise in the mobile space. Real Football 2010, the first in the series to land on iPad, has shifted 15 million downloads since its release last autumn. Now, Gameloft is showing off the latest edition in the series, and as a statement of intent the company has signed up flavour-of-the-month Spain and Barcelona striker, David Villa as the game's 'ambassador'. The company brought him along to its demo event last week, and it turns out that, like many professional footballers, he's a keen gamer. He told us that he plays footie games with his Barcelona team mates, much as premiership players do: "We have a lot of spare time, and one way to spend it is playing video games especially on our travels." When I ask him who's the best gamer at Barca, he shrugs, "It depends on the game. But I will be the best at Real Football 2011."Real Football 2011 bears little resemblance to its hobbling ancestors. This is the first in the series to use motion-captured animation, which on the glossy iPad and iPhone 4.0 screens, looks impressively smooth and lifelike. It's an effect accentuated by the more detailed player models, which have apparently been constructed using twice the number of polygons than in RF 2010. "Each player has specific dribble and moving speeds," says Nicolas Rodeghiero from Gaemloft's production team. "When you take control of Lionel Messi for instance, you will quickly see the difference with other players. "The players all have unique behaviors with the ball, including passes, control and trapping. And they have dedicated mocap animation with different inertia constraints."The pitch textures too have been re-worked to make the most of Apple's Retina displays, providing a surface that looks organic, rather than resembling a flat, feature-less gym floor, as we've often seen in mobile footie titles. The controls will be familiar to fans of the series. A virtual d-pad in the left corner controls movement, while in the right, there are shoot, pass and sprint buttons. As ever, the set-up takes a while to get used to, especially the direction controls, which suffer massively due to the lack of tactile feedback. Rolling your thumb over a flat screen is never going to feel as precise and intuitive as using an analogue stick, and your directional commands seem restricted to eight-way movement. Yet it does the job, and after a few matches, you're flicking the ball around with ease.More interesting perhaps, are the gestures to familiar iPhone touch controls. Players can perform step-overs by simply tapping an empty area of the screen, while double tapping accesses a range of more showy tricks, like a Ronaldinho-style flip-flap. Rotating your finger on the display pulls off a Zidane-inspired Marseilles turn. Better than these however, is the throw-in mechanic, which uses the in-built accelerometer, so you flick the handset forward to lob the ball. The game also has a few basic interconnectivity features. There's an RSS feed that runs the latest football scores from all over the world across the base of the options screens. Gamers can also save and edit replays of their favourite game moments (using touch screen pinch controls to zoom in on the action) and then post these straight to YouTube. There's also Wi-Fi and local multiplayer. I was hoping for something a little more in-depth, perhaps a live score ticker showing the matches your friends are playing, maybe with an option to drop in to their game, as well as the opportunity to set-up multiplayer leagues and tournaments. Perhaps next year.It plays a nice, slick game, though, the fast ball movement and uncomplicated passing dynamics resembling the PS2-era Pro Evolution Soccer titles. I found it difficult to get space for decent crosses, and of course, there's no through ball function to cut through a back four, but you only need so much complexity in a mobile title. With 350 teams to choose from and 14 domestic leagues, there are plenty of options for fans who want to play as their favourite clubs. Gameloft has also introduced a Fifa-style Story mode which lets you take over historic football matches at key moments: the likes of Liverpool's Champions League comeback against AC Milan, and the Italy vs France World Cup final are available (I asked the game's producer if there's a head butt move. He wasn't amused.)At the end of the demo, I get a few brief moments to talk to Villa again. He's very reserved, very contained, but when I ask what element of football has never really been simulated in a video game, he brightens up. "Improvisation," is his immediately reply. "In football there are rules and guidelines but there is always improvisation. It's difficult to replicate that in a video game."GamesMobileAppleiPhoneiPadKeith Stuartguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Replay: The History of Video Games ? a quick book review

A rather over-due glance at an excellent new history of gaming...The video game industry has really only existed for 40 years, yet attempting to catalogue the entire chronology into one book seems like the stuff of madness. The hundreds of gaming platforms; the complex, interconnected histories of the major developers and publishers; the esoteric minutiae of technological evolution ? it's a Herculean task just to hint at the scope and size of this billion dollar behemoth. Yet authors have tried. Steven L. Kent's mammoth Ultimate History of Video Games is perhaps the standard bearer, a dogged, US-centric traipse through gaming lore. Leonard Herman's Phoenix: The Fall and Rise of Videogames is another classic, extremely dry, but filled with accurate detail on the early days of the console wars. Replay: The History of Video Games by games journalist Tristan Donovan is a much more up-to-date and thoughtfully written opus. Beginning with the switching on of the first programmable computer in 1946 and closing with the rise of downloadable indie games, this engrossing work manages to touch on every vital facet of the industry, from the formative battles between Atari and Mattel, through the rise of the home computer to the emergence of the Japanese home console empire. But what Donovan is great at is catching the quiet little moments of videogame history, hidden beneath the broad sweep of technological change. He has great anecdotes about the first time Will Wright showed off his plans for The Sims (called Dollhouse at the time) to a bunch of disbelieving execs; and about the lawlessness of Ultima Online, where the early online RPG's creator Richard Garriott found himself intervening in virtual muggings. There's a wide range of quotes and personal stories, too, from veteran Atari employees to cult stars of the French gaming market to the people behind modern edifices like Fallout 3 and Bioshock. The book is also wider in its remit than most others. Donovan has space for the rise of the British computing scene, with Clive Sinclair given the space he deserves. It also looks at the South Korean online gaming phenonemon, and the birth of the MUD, an element criminally overlooked in many other general game histories. If there are any faults, it's that Donovan doesn't adequately address the emerging genres ? mobile, casual and social gaming. There's also little on gaming's dead-ends; virtual reality, Sega's many aborted consoles, the disappearance of the Matsushita M2 platform. But of course, in less than 400 pages, you need to concentrate on what went right rather than what went horribly wrong. So yes, Replay is a wonderfully thorough and entertaining history, casting its net wide, but rarely failing to capture the essence of a particular era. A rather impressive achievement.Replay: The History of Video Games is published by Yellow Ant and is priced 12.99GamesGame cultureKeith Stuartguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Xbox Head Proclaims Blu-ray Dead

Blacklaw writes "Microsoft has sided with Apple in a rare case of solidarity between the two companies, and declares that Blu-ray will be 'passed by' as a high-definition format. In many ways, it's hard to disagree. US markets have seen the demand for legal digital downloads of PC games exceed sales of the physical object for the first time, and Apple famously refuses to put a Blu-ray drive in its Macs, as Jobs prefers to send people towards iTunes to download their entertainment. That said, there's an argument for physical media, too. A recent survey suggested that the majority of gamers prefer physical discs, and digital downloads have the secondary effect of entirely cutting out the popular market for second-hand films and games — a plus for publishers, but a big negative for the consumer."

The PlayStation Move Arrives — a Hands-On Report

itwbennett writes "The PlayStation Move hit retail stores on Friday and blogger Peter Smith spent the weekend putting it (and his shoulder) through its paces. So how does this motion controller compare to the Wii? Smith says it 'felt a lot more precise' but that 'there were instances where the depth perception of the camera got lost for a moment.' The bottom line: 'If you have a Wii and the Wii Motion Plus accessory, there isn't a whole lot here right now to justify $100-$170 worth of gear for most gamers.'"
CNET is similarly critical, complaining of the continual calibration requirements and the dearth of good launch titles. The Guardian's games blog agrees that quality games are currently lacking, but says the accuracy and responsiveness are a step up from the Wii, giving the Move a lot of potential. iFixit did a teardown, providing an interesting look at the hardware inside the device.

Mulve is a fast, free, non-P2P way to download music

There isn't much else to say: Mulve is just a single 2MB, portable EXE that lets you download music. There's no UI to speak of, and it's completely unconfigurable. You just type in a band name or song title and... download.

The thing is, despite being free and tiny, the selection of music is insane. Lee found a bunch of crazy bands like The Wonderstuff, Mind Bomb, and Johnny Socko -- and for me, it even turned up plenty of hits for classical music by Mahler, Beethoven and Mozart. All of the generic pop crap is there, too.

And it's fast! TorrentFreak reports that the servers might be located in Russia, but that didn't prevent Lee and I from maxing out our connections -- 600KB/s for him, and 2MB/s for me. There's no peer-to-peer in sight, either; these are just direct, fast downloads. If you need some more convincing, check the short video after the break.

For a service supported by just a single banner ad, it's surely too good to be true (and almost certainly unlicensed). It'll get shut down -- it's just a matter of whether it'll be thanks to Interpol, or due to too much traffic.

Are consoles really better than PCs at shooter games?

Kinect creator thinks FPS games better on console...I've played on Kinect and was mightily impressed. Responsive and intuitive, Microsoft's upcoming hands-free motion controller will eventually host some unique gaming experiences as well as being a brilliant party starter. I exepct it to be huge. This doesn't mean though that I want to play "core" games on it. First person shooters? Most sports games? RPGs? The pad will do very nicely thanks. Kinect creator Kudo Tsunoda - unsurprisingly - thinks I am wrong. In an interview with gaminformer Kudo suggests that "core" games can use the Kinect if it is done correctly.I think that the stuff we have learned about Kinect is that you don't want to take it and port a experience over to Kinect or force it into things. You see a lot of motion control games that put the motion technology into a random game and that isn't the way to make an awesome experience. So far so good. Fingers crossed for Fable III then. But then Kudo lets his argument slip by using the example of first person shooters. If you think about the way that first person shooters evolved, they started on the PC. People for the longest time tried to port shooters from the PC onto the console. And people said the same things that they are saying now about Kinect ? "It's never going to be responsive enough to do this," or "You're never going to get a fun first person shooter on the console ? it's only made for a keyboard and mouse and that is the way it is supposed to be played." And as long as everyone was just porting the existing shooters over to console, they weren't as fun as the PC ones. Of course, they were built for the PC. Halo did an awesome job of building a first-person shooter exclusively for the console, and now hardly anyone plays first person shooters on the PC anymore. It's all about the console. And I feel it is the same with Kinect stuff. If you are constantly trying to take something that is made for a controller and port it over to Kinect, it's not going to be a good experience because it is made for a controller. If you take the time to build it for Kinect from the ground up, however, you can make something that is a very new experience, but lots of times even more fun than it was before. Ok, he has a point. Halo did revolutionise the FPS on the consoles. No one would really dispute that. You could argue that Goldeneye on the N64 was the real trendsetter but Halo was the first to incorporate the range of control play options that characterises the genre on the PC. But is he really suggesting that, "hardly anyone plays first person shooters on the PC"?Veteran shooter developer id have already voiced their opinion. Creative Director Tim Willits said:The FPS genre is still great on the PC, the input controllers are very responsive, the keyboard allows many more choices and options, and the social networking of the PC allows you to reach out and play with your friends much easier than any of the consoles. Plus, as any hardcore FPS gamer will tell you, the mouse is still the best device for aiming.I rarely play FPS on a PC these days. I'm lazy and it's just so much easier to stick on Halo or Modern Warfare 2 on a console. Plus after a day in front of a PC I don't necessarily want to spend an evening in front of one. Having said that if I was deadly serious about my shooters then the PC would be the natural home. As Willits says, the mouse is still the best device for aiming. What about you? Is the PC the natural home for the FPS? Or have the consoles taken over?GamesMicrosoftGreg Howsonguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Having trouble keeping up with Google's new products? Well, now there's yet another new Google site that collects them all for you: Google New! Google New doesn't list itself as a new product -- that would just be too redundant -- but it does provide the latest developments and launches across the whole Googlesphere.

You can search by products and general areas of interest, or just scroll through the latest releases and updates. Considering the rapid pace of Google product launches, and the fact that Google has at least a dozen separate product blogs, something like Google New has been a long time coming.

Check the video after the break for a quick look at what Google New is all about.

Twitter Tuesday - Tweetie 2 for Mac is coming, and it'll be free and unofficial

Filed under: Features, Web services, Social Software, Microblogging, Twitter
So, we've seen Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for iPad, and a new Twitter Web interface. Where's our Tweetie for Mac update? Twitter is finally releasing some details about what developer Loren Brichter -- hired by the big T to revamp Tweetie into Twitter for iPhone and create the official iPad app-- is doing with Tweetie for Mac.

Here's the deal: Tweetie for Mac won't become an official Twitter client. After all, Twitter just went through the biggest revision ever to its Web interface, making it look an awful lot like Mr. Brichter's iPad app, and they want desktop users to flock to that new website. So, Tweetie is just a side project for Loren, still developed under the banner of his still-sort-of-existent software company, Atebits. He won't be making any dough on it, though, because (according to Twitter), it's going to be made free.

That's good news for everyone except folks who bought the Mac software discount bundle MacHeist on the promise that they'd be let into an early Tweetie 2 beta and given free licenses for the new version of the app. Well, they'll still be getting free licenses ... but so will everyone else who wants to use Tweetie 2.

Tweet Nest is is a handy, self-hosted Twitter archive

Tweet Nest is one of the most valuable third-party Twitter apps to come along in ages, because it does something Twitter hasn't offered yet: backing up all your old tweets and making them searchable. The plus side is that it's free, and it works exactly the way you expect it to. The downside is that you have to have to host it yourself using PHP and MySQL. It's not hard to do, but it's an additional step that might put off people who don't have access to a server or shared environment to set it up. Our own Jason Clarke has more details on Tweet Nest in an earlier post.

Twitter update adds a host of keyboard shortcuts

One of the best features of the new Twitter user interface -- for those lucky enough to have it already -- is keyboard shortcuts. The Gmail-like key combos let you navigate the site more quickly, including jumping to any user's profile. Lifehacker has rounded up the list of shortcuts, for the keyboard-inclined amongst us.

"Who to Follow" improves, Twitter recommendations appear on Bing searches

Twitter's "Who to Follow" recommendation feature just got a lot better, because it now keeps track of the recommended users you repeatedly ignore, and stops showing them to you. The result: much less repetitive, much more useful bunches of users to follow. MG Siegler at TechCrunch offers bounteous praise for the Twitter team behind the improvements, and notes that his personal follower numbers have zoomed upward since they were introduced.

Speaking of Twitter recommendations, you may have noticed some Twitter users popping up alongside your Microsoft Bing search results. Bing now includes a "recommended users on Twitter" box, showing people who might be related to your search. It's not going to go as deep as Twitter's recommendations -- mainly sticking to verified celebs and companies -- but it's just the tip of the iceberg for what Bing could do with Twitter and search if they decided to take things in a more social direction.

Itsy is a slick, minimalist desktop Twitter app for Mac

If you're looking for an alternative to the stagnant Mac version of Tweetie, you might consider a neat little app called Itsy. It's not big on features, but it's got a clean, elegant interface that doesn't take up a lot of screen real estate. How itsy-bitsy is Itsy? Well, the screenshot I've included here is actual size.

Despite its tiny size, Itsy has a few power features like inline image display, optional Growl notifications, and one-click URL shrinking. My only (minor) complaint is that the keyboard shortcuts aren't as effective as I'd like. Hey, Itsy developers: can you make the direct message hotkey automatically fill in the author of the currently selected tweet?

No ?Xbox? for Secretary of Education?s Kids

While U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan (pictured) is a supporter of involving technology in schooling, he doesn’t appear to consider videogame consoles as a means to learn anything, demonstrating zero inclination to allow his six and eight year old kids to have a game machine at home.In a New York Times interview conducted with the education czar (thanks Seattle Weekly), Duncan was asked how he would respond if his kids asked him for an Xbox. He replied that he was “Not a fan,” and that his answer to his kids would be, “No, absolutely not.”In this case, it appears the interviewee is simply using the term Xbox as a broad amalgamation of all videogame consoles, so fanboys of various systems should take a breath. Google to make Apps accounts more secure with two-factor authentication

Keeping your online accounts secure is a must, and Google will soon begin rolling out an improved authentication system to its Apps customers. Beginning with Google Apps Premier, Education, and Government users, you'll soon be able to utilize a smartphone-generated verification code as a second layer of account security.

It's a bit like the dedicated RSA SecurID fobs some enterprises use for VPN authentication. Sign in to your Google account via the usual login screen and you're then prompted to verify your account. Launch the Google Authenicator app on your smartphone and enter the code it displays to complete the sign-in process. Google Authenticator will be available for Android (image after the break), Blackberry, and iPhone users. Don't have a fancy smartphone? No problem -- Google can also call you or send an SMS message to provide you with a code.

Apps administrators can currently enable two-factor authentication in their control panels. Free apps domains will receive the feature in the coming months -- but here's hoping Google also rolls this out as an option in Gmail. My password is plenty strong, but why not add a little extra protection if it's available?

They are experts in the application of violence. Copying Trumps Creating For FarmVille Creator Zynga

theodp writes "The good news for Zynga is that it scored the cover of SF Weekly. The bad news is that the FarmVillains cover story starts out by describing the secret to the toast-of-Silicon-Valley company's success thusly: 'Steal someone else's game. Change its name. Make millions. Repeat.' SF Weekly says interviews conducted with several former Zynga workers indicate that the practice of stealing other companies' game ideas — and then using Zynga's market clout to crowd out the games' originators — was business as usual. 'I don't ****ing want innovation,' one ex-employee recalled Pincus saying. 'You're not smarter than your competitor. Just copy what they do and do it until you get their numbers.' Another quipped that 'Zynga's motto is "Do Evil."' Valleywag piles on with an item on the existence of Zynga's underground 'Platinum Purchase Program,' reportedly geared towards making players known as 'whales' part with a minimum of $500 at a time for imaginary credits."

Rupert Murdoch Publishes North Korean Flash Games

eldavojohn writes "You might recall back in June when it was noted that North Korea was developing and exporting flash games. Now, the isolated nation state is apparently home to some game developers that are being published by a subsidiary of News Corp. (The games include Big Lebowski Bowling and Men In Black). Nosotek Joint Venture Company is treading on thin ice in the eyes of a few academics and specialists that claim the Fox News owner is 'working against US policy.' Concerns grow over the potential influx of cash, creating better programmers that are then leveraged into cyberwarfare capabilities. Nosotek said that 'training them to do games can't bring any harm.' The company asserts its innocence, though details on how much of the games were developed in North Korea are sparse. While one of the poorest nations in the world could clearly use the money, it remains to be seen if hardliner opponents like the United States will treat Nosotek (and parent company News Corp.) as if they're fostering the development of computer programmers inside the DPRK. The United Nations only stipulates that cash exchanged with companies in the DPRK cannot go to companies and businesses associated with military weaponry or the arms trade. Would you feel differently about Big Lebowski Bowling if you knew it was created in North Korea?"

New Yahoo! Mail to be sexier, faster, and more social

Yahoo! Mail's upcoming interface refresh made its first public appearance today, and it's surprisingly good. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, but to me, the overall layout is much more appealing than the Gmail default I've grown accustomed to.

The first thing I noticed was that, unlike Gmail, there are tabs provided to switch between inbox and contacts views -- instead of another handful of buttons crammed into the left-hand navigation. Yahoo! Mail looks quite polished and a bit more like a desktop mail app.

This update isn't just be about looks, however. The new Yahoo! Mail will also be faster and feature an updated inbox search page, as well as Facebook, Twitter, and SMS integration. There's also talk of new photo and video sharing tools and an updated version of the integrated Yahoo! Messenger.

Yahoo reports that the Mail update will become available to users sometime this fall, though no specific date has been given at this point. Users will have the choice of opting in to the beta once it's made available.

I'm going to assume the color scheme will be customizable. While that's a nice shade of purple, it wouldn't be my number one pick.

Diaspora's "open Facebook" source code riddled with security issues

It's important to note that the team at Diaspora was very up front about the recent pre-alpha dev-release of their code having "security holes and bugs" -- but early reports from coders who have gone through it paint a pretty grim picture so far. Code that's wrought with bugs and security holes is one thing, but many devs don't see the point in contributing the time and effort required to fix the issues.
A recurring theme among complaints is that the security holes are so gaping and deep-seated, that the entire thing may need a complete rewrite to even be worth the effort. Adding to the negative-pressure are complaints that the license chosen by Diaspora for the release is simply too restrictive to allow for proper open source growth.
As far as the code is concerned: The Register goes as far as to say that the code is "littered of landmines" -- which may be a bit strong since it usually implies intent when dealing with security holes, but it does fittingly describe the amount of said holes/bugs being reported. A commenter at Hacker News stated that after looking through the code, he found it to be "a combination of Rails Security 101 errors and 'web application programming is hard.'"
Another commenter talked about the photo controller, which Diaspora described in this release as being the only portion not "signed and ecrypted." Not being signed and encrypted sounds like the photo portion of Diaspora simply isn't, well, signed or encrypted yet. Instead, it appears that any user can upload any photo to any other user's account, and also delete any photo at will. Holes like these are much larger than the sort one would expect, but this is a pre-alpha release.

There's a fairly decent following for the happy-go-lucky argument that since the code is now open source, that the holes and bugs would be fixed as a matter of course. One angry commenter at Hacker News summed up the other side of that argument by saying that "slapping a GPL on your codebase and pushing it to GitHub does not make magical unicorns poop security findings into your mailbox." Hyperbole aside, he's probably right about that. There's a lot of heavy discussion right now about how the code will get fixed by people willing to do so -- except that the people who seem to know what's wrong with it have no desire to do it.
Part of that apathy stems from the license chosen for the code's release. As Jarin Udom brings up on his blog, Diaspora chose an AGPL license -- which would in effect force any contributing parties to divulge their own source code if they make anything using Diaspora's code. This wouldn't be a problem for the average user, but it does more or less curtail any hopes that large companies would ever spend a dime working to develop one single line of Diaspora-based code.
Read more discussion on Jarin's assertions at Reddit.
Once you combine the licensing woes and the "crappy code" with the obvious barriers to widespread adoption by non-geeks (such as the need for their own hosting service/server, or trusting a friend enough to allow them custody of their data), there isn't much impetus for the average unpaid developer to devote man-hours to something from which only the team at Diaspora can legally make a profit.
With a restrictive license and shoddy code out the gate, the Diaspora pre-alpha doesn't look very healthy at this point in time, but if you've got the experience necessary to lend a hand to the folks out there who want this venture to succeed, then by all means, hit up GitHub and get your code.
