Chrome Web Store preview adds Google Checkout payments, recommendations
Google will be throwing open the doors to the Chrome Web Store some time in the coming months, and they're currently preparing for a whirlwind global tour to sing the praises of HTML5 and Chrome. On the tour, the Web Store will be a frequent topic of discussion and they've recently announced a couple important additions to the Store's developer preview.
Google Checkout payments are now supported, and developers can sign up for a merchant account on their dashboard page. Page previews have now been added -- so you can see how your app will look in the Store prior to publishing. Pages can be customized with header images and Google is also allowing devs to upload their own promotional banners (they'll be displayed when your app is feature in the store).
One downside for developers hoping to sell their apps in the Web Store is that Google Checkout might be the only payment option. Checkout still isn't available in that many countries, so international devs looking to deliver localized Web apps will have to wait for Google to make good on their expansion promises.
ed note: it's become an expected part of app stores, but as you can see in the screenshot the Chrome Web Store will offer recommendations based on what other users install.Chrome Web Store preview adds Google Checkout payments, recommendations originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:00:00 EST. WarLight is an addictive turn-based, Risk-style Time-Waster
I don't remember when I last posted a turn-based Time-Waster, but WarLight was so nice, I simply couldn't skip it. It's basically Risk; you get a world map, and you start off with a certain percentage in your color. With every turn, you get a few more "armies" (depending on how much space you've conquered), and you try to take over more of the map by attacking certain territories.
Each turn is made up of three stages. First, you deploy all of the new armies that you received (each country may have more than one army stationed in it). Then, you attack or transfer into new territories.
You can see how many armies are currently stationed in every new territory; if a territory has 10 armies, attacking it with a single army would do you little good.
Of course, while all of this is going on, your rival is also attacking and conquering their own section of the world and rapidly approaching your territories. Suddenly, you need to start fortifying your territories, finding ways to conquer your rival's territories, and figuring out what they're going to do next.
The game is very versatile, and it offers a ton of options. You can even graph your progress through the game in order to see how many armies each of you had on the board at every turn, or how many territories each of you controlled, etc.
You can play against the computer (especially useful for learning the game - there's a tutorial to start you off), but the real fun begins when you play against another person. This is one of those games that can be open in a background window all day long. It's very addictive indeed.WarLight is an addictive turn-based, Risk-style Time-Waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. New Game: Museum of Thieves
When Separation Day is canceled, Goldie, runs away to the mysterious Museum of Dunt. Only the cunning mind of a thief can understand the museum’s strange, shifting rooms. Fortunately, Goldie has a talent for thieving. Which is just as well, because the leader of the Blessed Guardians has his own plans for the museum—plans that threaten the lives of everyone Goldie loves. And while there's great wonders hidden in the museum, there's terrible things too, things that mustn't be allowed to break out into the city. And if ever the museum's under threat, those things grow more and more restless…. In this beautifully illustrated game based on the first book in the Keepers Trilogy by Lian Tanner – MUSEUM OF THIEVES – you must spot the differences in order to find your way through the museum. Beware and be warned... The Blessed Guardians are watching.

The PlayStation Move Arrives — a Hands-On Report
CNET is similarly critical, complaining of the continual calibration requirements and the dearth of good launch titles. The Guardian's games blog agrees that quality games are currently lacking, but says the accuracy and responsiveness are a step up from the Wii, giving the Move a lot of potential. iFixit did a teardown, providing an interesting look at the hardware inside the device.

Mulve is a fast, free, non-P2P way to download music
There isn't much else to say: Mulve is just a single 2MB, portable EXE that lets you download music. There's no UI to speak of, and it's completely unconfigurable. You just type in a band name or song title and... download.
The thing is, despite being free and tiny, the selection of music is insane. Lee found a bunch of crazy bands like The Wonderstuff, Mind Bomb, and Johnny Socko -- and for me, it even turned up plenty of hits for classical music by Mahler, Beethoven and Mozart. All of the generic pop crap is there, too.
And it's fast! TorrentFreak reports that the servers might be located in Russia, but that didn't prevent Lee and I from maxing out our connections -- 600KB/s for him, and 2MB/s for me. There's no peer-to-peer in sight, either; these are just direct, fast downloads. If you need some more convincing, check the short video after the break.
For a service supported by just a single banner ad, it's surely too good to be true (and almost certainly unlicensed). It'll get shut down -- it's just a matter of whether it'll be thanks to Interpol, or due to too much traffic.

Google New: a new Google product to list new Google products
Having trouble keeping up with Google's new products? Well, now there's yet another new Google site that collects them all for you: Google New! Google New doesn't list itself as a new product -- that would just be too redundant -- but it does provide the latest developments and launches across the whole Googlesphere.
You can search by products and general areas of interest, or just scroll through the latest releases and updates. Considering the rapid pace of Google product launches, and the fact that Google has at least a dozen separate product blogs, something like Google New has been a long time coming.
Check the video after the break for a quick look at what Google New is all about.

Twitter Tuesday - Tweetie 2 for Mac is coming, and it'll be free and unofficial
So, we've seen Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for iPad, and a new Twitter Web interface. Where's our Tweetie for Mac update? Twitter is finally releasing some details about what developer Loren Brichter -- hired by the big T to revamp Tweetie into Twitter for iPhone and create the official iPad app-- is doing with Tweetie for Mac.
Here's the deal: Tweetie for Mac won't become an official Twitter client. After all, Twitter just went through the biggest revision ever to its Web interface, making it look an awful lot like Mr. Brichter's iPad app, and they want desktop users to flock to that new website. So, Tweetie is just a side project for Loren, still developed under the banner of his still-sort-of-existent software company, Atebits. He won't be making any dough on it, though, because (according to Twitter), it's going to be made free.
That's good news for everyone except folks who bought the Mac software discount bundle MacHeist on the promise that they'd be let into an early Tweetie 2 beta and given free licenses for the new version of the app. Well, they'll still be getting free licenses ... but so will everyone else who wants to use Tweetie 2.
Tweet Nest is is a handy, self-hosted Twitter archive
Tweet Nest is one of the most valuable third-party Twitter apps to come along in ages, because it does something Twitter hasn't offered yet: backing up all your old tweets and making them searchable. The plus side is that it's free, and it works exactly the way you expect it to. The downside is that you have to have to host it yourself using PHP and MySQL. It's not hard to do, but it's an additional step that might put off people who don't have access to a server or shared environment to set it up. Our own Jason Clarke has more details on Tweet Nest in an earlier post.
Twitter update adds a host of keyboard shortcuts
One of the best features of the new Twitter user interface -- for those lucky enough to have it already -- is keyboard shortcuts. The Gmail-like key combos let you navigate the site more quickly, including jumping to any user's profile. Lifehacker has rounded up the list of shortcuts, for the keyboard-inclined amongst us.
"Who to Follow" improves, Twitter recommendations appear on Bing searches
Twitter's "Who to Follow" recommendation feature just got a lot better, because it now keeps track of the recommended users you repeatedly ignore, and stops showing them to you. The result: much less repetitive, much more useful bunches of users to follow. MG Siegler at TechCrunch offers bounteous praise for the Twitter team behind the improvements, and notes that his personal follower numbers have zoomed upward since they were introduced.
Speaking of Twitter recommendations, you may have noticed some Twitter users popping up alongside your Microsoft Bing search results. Bing now includes a "recommended users on Twitter" box, showing people who might be related to your search. It's not going to go as deep as Twitter's recommendations -- mainly sticking to verified celebs and companies -- but it's just the tip of the iceberg for what Bing could do with Twitter and search if they decided to take things in a more social direction.
Itsy is a slick, minimalist desktop Twitter app for Mac
If you're looking for an alternative to the stagnant Mac version of Tweetie, you might consider a neat little app called Itsy. It's not big on features, but it's got a clean, elegant interface that doesn't take up a lot of screen real estate. How itsy-bitsy is Itsy? Well, the screenshot I've included here is actual size.
Despite its tiny size, Itsy has a few power features like inline image display, optional Growl notifications, and one-click URL shrinking. My only (minor) complaint is that the keyboard shortcuts aren't as effective as I'd like. Hey, Itsy developers: can you make the direct message hotkey automatically fill in the author of the currently selected tweet?

Google to make Apps accounts more secure with two-factor authentication
Keeping your online accounts secure is a must, and Google will soon begin rolling out an improved authentication system to its Apps customers. Beginning with Google Apps Premier, Education, and Government users, you'll soon be able to utilize a smartphone-generated verification code as a second layer of account security.
It's a bit like the dedicated RSA SecurID fobs some enterprises use for VPN authentication. Sign in to your Google account via the usual login screen and you're then prompted to verify your account. Launch the Google Authenicator app on your smartphone and enter the code it displays to complete the sign-in process. Google Authenticator will be available for Android (image after the break), Blackberry, and iPhone users. Don't have a fancy smartphone? No problem -- Google can also call you or send an SMS message to provide you with a code.
Apps administrators can currently enable two-factor authentication in their control panels. Free apps domains will receive the feature in the coming months -- but here's hoping Google also rolls this out as an option in Gmail. My password is plenty strong, but why not add a little extra protection if it's available?

New Yahoo! Mail to be sexier, faster, and more social
The first thing I noticed was that, unlike Gmail, there are tabs provided to switch between inbox and contacts views -- instead of another handful of buttons crammed into the left-hand navigation. Yahoo! Mail looks quite polished and a bit more like a desktop mail app.
This update isn't just be about looks, however. The new Yahoo! Mail will also be faster and feature an updated inbox search page, as well as Facebook, Twitter, and SMS integration. There's also talk of new photo and video sharing tools and an updated version of the integrated Yahoo! Messenger.
Yahoo reports that the Mail update will become available to users sometime this fall, though no specific date has been given at this point. Users will have the choice of opting in to the beta once it's made available.
I'm going to assume the color scheme will be customizable. While that's a nice shade of purple, it wouldn't be my number one pick.

Diaspora's "open Facebook" source code riddled with security issues
It's important to note that the team at Diaspora was very up front about the recent pre-alpha dev-release of their code having "security holes and bugs" -- but early reports from coders who have gone through it paint a pretty grim picture so far. Code that's wrought with bugs and security holes is one thing, but many devs don't see the point in contributing the time and effort required to fix the issues.
A recurring theme among complaints is that the security holes are so gaping and deep-seated, that the entire thing may need a complete rewrite to even be worth the effort. Adding to the negative-pressure are complaints that the license chosen by Diaspora for the release is simply too restrictive to allow for proper open source growth.
As far as the code is concerned: The Register goes as far as to say that the code is "littered of landmines" -- which may be a bit strong since it usually implies intent when dealing with security holes, but it does fittingly describe the amount of said holes/bugs being reported. A commenter at Hacker News stated that after looking through the code, he found it to be "a combination of Rails Security 101 errors and 'web application programming is hard.'"
Another commenter talked about the photo controller, which Diaspora described in this release as being the only portion not "signed and ecrypted." Not being signed and encrypted sounds like the photo portion of Diaspora simply isn't, well, signed or encrypted yet. Instead, it appears that any user can upload any photo to any other user's account, and also delete any photo at will. Holes like these are much larger than the sort one would expect, but this is a pre-alpha release.
There's a fairly decent following for the happy-go-lucky argument that since the code is now open source, that the holes and bugs would be fixed as a matter of course. One angry commenter at Hacker News summed up the other side of that argument by saying that "slapping a GPL on your codebase and pushing it to GitHub does not make magical unicorns poop security findings into your mailbox." Hyperbole aside, he's probably right about that. There's a lot of heavy discussion right now about how the code will get fixed by people willing to do so -- except that the people who seem to know what's wrong with it have no desire to do it.
Part of that apathy stems from the license chosen for the code's release. As Jarin Udom brings up on his blog, Diaspora chose an AGPL license -- which would in effect force any contributing parties to divulge their own source code if they make anything using Diaspora's code. This wouldn't be a problem for the average user, but it does more or less curtail any hopes that large companies would ever spend a dime working to develop one single line of Diaspora-based code.
Read more discussion on Jarin's assertions at Reddit.
Once you combine the licensing woes and the "crappy code" with the obvious barriers to widespread adoption by non-geeks (such as the need for their own hosting service/server, or trusting a friend enough to allow them custody of their data), there isn't much impetus for the average unpaid developer to devote man-hours to something from which only the team at Diaspora can legally make a profit.
With a restrictive license and shoddy code out the gate, the Diaspora pre-alpha doesn't look very healthy at this point in time, but if you've got the experience necessary to lend a hand to the folks out there who want this venture to succeed, then by all means, hit up GitHub and get your code.

The default Windows 7 welcome screen looks fairly nice, but it's not customizable out-of-the-box like the rest of your desktop is. There are, however, plenty of free apps that allow you personalize the background and add text messages -- and Logon Screen is a good option.
Just install Logon Screen, browse for the picture you'd like to swap in, and configure any advanced options you'd like. In addition to changing the background, Logon Screen allows you add a customized notice and tweak button appearance.
