Newsweek for iPad now has in-app subscriptions
Filed under: Mobile
This feature is powered by Apple's in-app purchasing system that was recently made available to publishers. The reason it hasn't yet got more traction seems to be linked to a strange limitation that Apple baked into it: it doesn't let publishers gather information about their subscribers (information which may help them get new readers and advertisers). The exact reasoning behind this is unclear, but it has kept other publishers from adopting the platform. Another thing Apple's system doesn't allow at this point is for digital subscriptions to be bundled with paper subscriptions. These shortcomings have led to the current state of affairs, where most magazines release a new app with each issue.
Apple is reportedly planning on working closer with magazines on subscriptions, but when or how that will happen remains to be seen.

Fable III ? review
Xbox 360, Microsoft, cert 16, out now
In the 50 years since the events of Fable II, the industrial revolution has come to the world of Albion and it's not the only significant change. King Logan, eldest son of the second game's hero, has grown into an increasingly tyrannical ruler and, as his brother or sister, you are charged with leading an uprising, with the ultimate aim of deposing your sibling and uniting a disillusioned populace.
The first half of the game, therefore, is a romantic tale of revolution as you gather followers, winning over influential leaders with word and deed. Along the way, you'll find yourself making promises and, as you progress further down the road to rule, it becomes clear that keeping them all is going to be almost impossible.
Previous Fable games have offered some tricky choices, but few were as agonising as they are here. It's rare for a game to offer such testing moral dilemmas, let alone feel so politically relevant: making unpopular cuts to fill the treasury's previously empty coffers has an eerie resonance.
The quality of the storytelling and characterisation in the Fable universe has always been high, but the exceptional voice cast lends additional gravitas. The likes of Ben Kingsley, Michael Fassbender and Simon Pegg deliver terrific performances, though they're helped by an excellent script that is equally comfortable with high drama and slapstick comedy.
One quest pokes gentle fun at table-top role-playing games (with a splendid payoff line that should tickle those who completed Fable II) while a nightmarish, hallucinatory sequence in a distant land is perhaps darker and more disturbing than the series has ever been.
Other refinements see combat and menus streamlined, with weapons evolving over time, developing unique looks and characteristics through the player's actions.
It does seem on occasion that Guildford-based developer Lionhead Studios has stripped back too much: interactions with villagers are limited and many of the choices are slightly silly. Behavioural inconsistencies are to be expected with a game this ambitious, but it's still a little incongruous to see a king delivering a package for a servant.
Yet these are rare moments of irritation in an adventure rich with action, pathos and humour. Despite losing a little of its bucolic charm in the process of industrialisation, Albion is still a joy to explore, with fairy-tale locations that stir the imagination and a wealth of memorable characters and moments. It's a charming and thoroughly British triumph that deserves to be celebrated.

?Hobbit Bill? Contains Videogame Language
New Zealand’s “Hobbit Bill,” legislation designed to keep production of two Warner Bros. films based on The Hobbit in the country, also has language pertaining to videogame makers.
Amendments to the Employment Relations Act 2000 states that workers involved with film production work “will be independent contractors rather than employees, unless they choose to be employees by entering into an agreement that provides that they are employees.”
The legislation came about, according to the New York Times, in response to a small actors’ union, the New Zealand Actors Equity, demanding that “producers bargain collectively with actors on the films.”

Mass Effect 2 wins Golden Joystick double
Bioware's action RPG takes the RPG and Ultimate Game of the Year awards at London ceremony; Call of Duty series picks up Shooter and One to Watch gongs.
The 27th annual Golden Joystick awards took place in London today, with awards dished out according to the results of a public vote. Last year's ceremony saw Fallout 3 claim the Game of the Year award, with the game also winning PC Game of the Year. Gears of War 2 did the same for the Xbox as well as Killzone 2 for the PlayStation.
This year's ceremony abandoned the platform-specific awards and focussed instead on genres. It was perhaps this decision that led to only a couple of double-award winners: Mass Effect 2, which took home both RPG and Ultimate Game of the Year awards, and Plants vs. Zombies, which claimed Strategy and Download titles. There were no other repeated winners, leaving big hitters such as Assassin's Creed II to take prizes alongside more indie fare such as World of Goo.
Call of Duty did well as a franchise, though, with the upcoming Black Ops taking the One to Watch award, marking the third year in a row that a Call of Duty game has claimed that prize. Modern Warfare 2 also took the Best Shooter award and managed second place behind Mass Effect 2 in the Ultimate Game category.

Professor on War Games: Studios Stuck in ?Netherworld?
A ForeignPolicy.com piece on the state of war videogames asks if such titles are bringing the reality of current conflicts into the living rooms of gamers, or simply exploiting them for commercial gain.
A good chunk of the piece centers on the recently released Medal of Honor, in light of the controversy it generated. That controversy, the author writes, “wouldn't have occurred even five or six years ago,” as “video game studios seemed to be reticent about tackling contemporary conflicts, preferring instead to crank out games based in abstracted worlds and full of abstracted enemies.”

Grand Theft Auto IV Complete - Xbox 360
This is the definitive Grand Theft Auto IV experience The highest rated game of all time is back in this all new Complete Edition.
DJ Hero 2 for Xbox, PS3 and Wii | Game review
Xbox 360/PS3/Wii; 39.99; age: 12+; FreeStyle Games/Activision 4/5
Wonderful game though it was, the original DJ Hero suffered from poor sales. So it's great that Activision has backed a second iteration. Perhaps it was dismissed as rhythm-action fodder for those who spend half their lives in clubs ? whereas those in the know will tell you it represents about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on while manipulating a bizarre input device attached to a console. If the alt.country heads and jazz cats had a go on it, they might just have some sort of epiphany.
DJ Hero 2, like its predecessor, bears scant resemblance to any form of known DJing, and adheres solidly to the blueprint set by its predecessor. But it shows plenty of evidence that serious thought has gone into how to improve it ? mainly by adding plenty of new features which make you feel much more in control of proceedings.
This time around, the scratching, tapping, crossfading, spinbacks and so on have been augmented by sequences of freestyle scratching, cross-fading and rhythmic sample tapping, plus so?called "held taps", which are longer, effected samples that you have to press and hold. Plus, if you're that way inclined (and in a real club nothing makes the spirits sink more than seeing a DJ do this), you can grab a mic in order to sing or rap along. And you can now attach two turntables in order to battle a friend.
This time around, in other words, there's more to do, and more periods in which you can do your own thing. It generally feels much slicker than its predecessor ? the visuals give a great impression of the excitement found on the best dancefloors, the single-player game feels more coherent (you have to establish a superclub-style brand on the back of skills on the ones and twos) and the music is better. The original game's bias towards bootleg-style hip-hop mixes has given way to a clubbier vibe (although the audacity of some of the mixes will still make you grin). Top DJs like Tiesto, the RZA and Deadmau5 have contributed, along with David Guetta, whose cringeworthy cheesiness really shouldn't tally with his incredible popularity.
You can buy various bundles, with one, two or no turntable peripherals (the peripheral itself is unchanged), most of which come with a free copy of the original game. Even if you bought the original, it might be worth getting another turntable, as the battle mode will get any party started, while making a racket that non-participants will still appreciate. For our money, this is the best rhythm-action game money can buy ? it would be a travesty if it failed to find an audience this time around. Much like the travesty which is David Guetta's failure to attract universal hoots of derision.

IE9 Developer Preview 6 launched, and new Test Drive site now live
Not only is Developer Preview 6 now available (don't get too excited, non-developers; this is another UI-less build), but there's also a ton of new demos that you can try out. A few of you might recognise SVG Helicopter, and Flickr Postcards is quite possibly the cutest application of HTML5 and CSS3 that I've ever seen.
For more info on Preview 6, check the full release notes.
As you can see in the screenshot above, there's a rather cute easter egg for Chrome 8 users, too!
