BBC One's Panorama to Tackle Game Addiction

The BBC program Panorama will tackle the subject of videogame addiction in a show set to air on BBC One Monday, December 6, at 8.30 pm UK time. Reporter Raphael Rowe interviews school and university students that have dropped out to tune into videogames "for up to 21 hours a day" and "experts" who urge that more research is needed on the subject. The program, which C&VG is calling a "documentary," further promises to "reveal the hidden psychological devices in games that are designed to keep us coming back for more."

Take the awesome power of Wolfram Alpha; add the convenience and intelligence of Google's built-in calculator. Now mix them up and serve in a piping hot Chrome add-on: Chromey Calculator.

When you click the extension's humble button, it opens a quick prompt pane (you can also pop it out to its own separate Chrome window). You can then feed it with any expression Wolfram Alpha or Google Calculator understands, and even mix those expressions up.

Chromey Calculator decides whether to use Google or Wolfram Alpha. You can see what engine it used for your calculation by hovering over a result; clicking the logo takes you to the source page (handy mostly for Wolfram Alpha calculations, which usually yield interesting graphs).

The add-on even supports variables. One proposed example goes like this:

@Everest = height of Everest
@K2 = height of K2
@Everest - @K2 in meters

So this basically takes the height of Everest and of K2 (the world's second-highest mountain) and calculates the difference - all within your Chrome window, without opening any other sites or tabs.

This is very powerful stuff; the only limit is your imagination - I would love to hear any interesting examples in the comments.

aDeskbar is a slick menu and dock app for Linux systems which offers a wide range of customization options. EA Compares Buying Harmonix to Catching a Falling Knife

Speaking to Bloomberg yesterday, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello compared the idea of buying Rock Band maker Harmonix to "catching a falling knife." Parent company Viacom recently said that it wants to sell off its games unit, of which Harmonix is a core component. Sales of music-based games have been on the decline in recent years, which makes selling a company whose core business is developing those types of products a challenge.

Riccitiello said that, while buying the company makes sense in theory, it is not the "strategic direction" his company is going in.

"I’m sure some smart investor will buy the business feeling that they can catch a falling knife," he told Bloomberg, "but more people have been cut trying to catch falling knives than have benefitted from getting the timing exactly right." Read More

Ubuntu One client for Windows goes beta

One knock against Canonical's Ubuntu One sync service is the fact that clients for other operating systems aren't available. That gives Dropbox a pretty big edge at the moment -- though Canonical has taken one huge step toward leveling the playing field with the release of a beta Ubuntu One app for Windows.

OMG! Ubuntu has gotten beta access already and shared a handful of screenshots. Ubuntu One for Windows offers a very similar experience to its Linux cousin, though right now now it can only sync your main Ubuntu One folder. Support for other folders, contacts, notes, and bookmarks is on the way.

You'll need to sign up on this page with the email address you used to create your Ubuntu One account. Once that's done, it's just a matter of waiting patiently for your invite.
