Report: Still Hope for AU R18+ Rating

The R18+ rating in Australia may have support with some attorneys-general, according to this GameSpot Australia report (thanks Ryan O'Meara).

The Standing Committee of Attorneys-General (SCAG) meeting set for December 10 may be the place for the issue to get some attention; last week ACT Senator Kate Lundy brought up the benefits of the rating system before the senate, and this week Federal Opposition Shadow Attorney-General George Brandis talked to GameSpot AU about the importance of having an R18+. From Brandis:

"The Coalition recognises there are inconsistencies in the current classification system that need to be addressed," Brandis told GameSpot AU. "We are looking closely at a number of proposals as to how the Australian classification system can be more effective across all types of media, including games and software." Read More

First Windows Phone 7 update will "do what took Apple three years"

If you've got a Windows Phone 7 device, chances are good that it's missing a few key features that you'd really like to be using. Features like multitasking, copy and paste, turn-by-turn navigation, and support for custom ringtones. If we're to believe the excited chatter on Twitter lately, those features -- and more -- are coming in the January Windows Phone 7 update. Developer Tom Hounsell went so far as to say that Microsoft has managed to do in three months what took Apple three years.

While that might be true, it's a much different mobile sector than it was three years ago -- and for Windows Phone 7 to launch without those functions came as a bit of a surprise. Microsoft really needed to deliver much more quickly than Apple, since competing devices ship with that functionality right out of the box.

Several devs have promised screenshots of the Windows Phone 7 update later today, so we'll keep you posted. We're hoping the update adds a built-in method for taking screenshots. How about it, Microsoft?

Better Pop Up Blocker for Chrome blocks pop-ups -- better

Who doesn't love pop-ups? Really, I mean, it has to be the world's most effective and well-respected mode of advertising. You're browsing along, reading something on the Web, and suddenly your screen explodes with color and NSFW video clips. Seriously, how can you not enjoy that?

If you're one of the odd few who aren't enthusiastic about pop-ups, you might appreciate Better Pop Up Blocker. While Chrome already features some pop-up blocking measures, they're not very serious. Even when you add the popular AdBlock extension, Chrome's blocking abilities still leave something to be desired. This point is made quite convincingly by the Better Pop Up Blocker homepage. If you're using Chrome, just click the image that says Click me, I'm an image, and see what I mean.

By default, Chrome allowed three different huge pop-up windows to appear. After installing Better Pop Up Blocker, no pop-up appeared when clicking the image. I was still able to see what pop-ups were blocked using the extension's menu and open them if I did want to access them. The browser action icon will every time it blocks a pop-up, just to let you know it's working.

All in all, it's a welcome addition to my Chrome installation - and one that will remain installed on my system.

Ubuntu One client for Windows goes beta

One knock against Canonical's Ubuntu One sync service is the fact that clients for other operating systems aren't available. That gives Dropbox a pretty big edge at the moment -- though Canonical has taken one huge step toward leveling the playing field with the release of a beta Ubuntu One app for Windows.

OMG! Ubuntu has gotten beta access already and shared a handful of screenshots. Ubuntu One for Windows offers a very similar experience to its Linux cousin, though right now now it can only sync your main Ubuntu One folder. Support for other folders, contacts, notes, and bookmarks is on the way.

You'll need to sign up on this page with the email address you used to create your Ubuntu One account. Once that's done, it's just a matter of waiting patiently for your invite.
